Illustrated edition featuring numerous in-text woodcuts, originally designed by Hans Holbein and first published in the 1538 Icones historiarum veteris Testamenti by the Trechsel brothers in Lyon.  Old vellum wear wear and soiling and some splitting on spine, later paste downs, title page soiled with losses and repaired , some general toning,  occasional heavy dampstains, soiling and occasional minor tear throughout.   Some woodcuts in contemporary color.   Generally, a worn copy with flaws but a rare interesting Bible. A rare example of Renaissance reuse of exceptional woodblock illustrations. Ex-libris General Theological Seminary INVJCB50-16

This 1544 Bible exemplifies the Renaissance-era practice of reusing masterful woodcuts to enhance scriptural editions. Hans Holbein’s illustrations, originally created for the Old Testament, were groundbreaking, offering a visual interpretation of biblical narratives that redefined iconography across Europe. Holbein's woodblocks were so influential that they found their way into Bibles published in cities as diverse as Paris, Zurich, and Antwerp, underscoring their enduring appeal. The reuse of these woodcuts in this edition speaks to the intersection of theological scholarship, artistry, and humanist publishing in the early modern period.
